DOJ launches Combating Redlining Initiative Trident Mortgage pays $22M in largest settlement

Attorney General Merrick Garland announces the Justice Department's Combating Redlining Initiative, dedicating additional resources to prosecute modern redlining cases under the Fair Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act. On the same day, Trident Mortgage Company agrees to a $22 million settlement, the largest redlining settlement in DOJ history, for systematically denying mortgage applications from Black and Hispanic borrowers in the Philadelphia area. Within two years, the DOJ obtains redlining settlements totaling over $100 million from lenders in cities including Houston, Memphis, and Buffalo.
