Congress passes the War Powers Resolution over Nixon's veto

Congress overrode President Nixon's veto to enact the War Powers Resolution, requiring presidents to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing US forces to hostilities and to obtain authorization within 60 days. Nixon called the law unconstitutional; every president since has contested its application.
