OpenAI board ousts CEO Sam Altman for misleading directors about AI safety review processes

OpenAI's four-member board—Helen Toner, Tasha McCauley, Ilya Sutskever, and Adam D'Angelo—voted on November 17, 2023 to remove CEO Sam Altman, citing that he had not been consistently candid in communications with the board, hindering its oversight. The board later stated Altman had provided inaccurate information about the company's formal AI safety processes and that two executives had documented psychological abuse. President Greg Brockman resigned in solidarity within hours.
