Plaintiffs file emergency SCOTUS response urging justices to keep injunction blocking Alabama's racially discriminatory 2023 congressional map

Voting rights plaintiffs in the Singleton and Milligan cases filed an emergency response at the U.S. Supreme Court on June 2, 2026, urging the justices not to lift the lower court's injunction blocking Alabama from using its 2023 congressional map. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall had filed an emergency stay application on May 27 directed to Justice Clarence Thomas. Plaintiffs argued lifting the injunction would cause election chaos: absentee ballots had already been mailed to voters under the court-ordered map, and state offices were closed June 1 for Jefferson Davis's birthday, making voter reassignment logistically impossible.
