NAACP files Alexander v. South Carolina over congressional map

The South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP and individual plaintiffs filed suit in federal district court on January 28, 2022, challenging the newly enacted congressional map as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. The complaint alleged the legislature used race as the predominant factor in redrawing SC-1, moving Black voters to crack their political cohesion in violation of the Equal Protection Clause. The case was assigned to a three-judge district court panel.
