Derek Chauvin sentenced to 22.5 years for George Floyd murder

Judge Peter Cahill sentences former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, the longest sentence ever given a police officer for an on-duty killing in Minnesota. Cahill imposes the sentence above the standard presumptive 12.5 years because of "particular cruelty" and the presence of children at the scene. Attorney General Merrick Garland announces the DOJ has opened a formal pattern-or-practice investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department, the first such probe under the Biden administration. Civil rights advocates call the sentence a milestone but note it does not address systemic reform.
