Federal Courts Order Reinstatement of Fired Federal Workers; Administration Defies
Multiple federal district courts ordered the Trump administration to reinstate tens of thousands of employees fired through mass terminations beginning in February 2025, finding the dismissals violated the Civil Service Reform Act and due process requirements. Judge William Alsup in San Francisco and Judge James Boasberg in Washington issued reinstatement orders the administration appealed, delayed, and in some cases openly defied while continuing terminations. The Merit Systems Protection Board, the statutory appeals body for federal workers, was left without a quorum after Trump removed its chair.
