Brennan Center documents wave of election official resignations driven by threats and political pressure
The Brennan Center for Justice published survey findings in March 2022 showing that one in three local election officials had been harassed, abused, or threatened because of their work, and one in five said they were likely to leave their position before the 2024 presidential election. The survey of more than 600 local election officials documented a national pattern: post-2020 threats, social media harassment, and intimidation campaigns had driven experienced administrators from their posts in swing states including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The departures created institutional knowledge gaps heading into the 2024 election cycle.
