Under Banks, Border Patrol expands interior raids beyond its traditional 100-mile border zone

Under Chief Michael Banks, the Border Patrol expanded its operational scope beyond the traditional 100-mile border zone to participate in interior enforcement operations coordinated with ICE. The Trump administration directed CBP and Border Patrol agents to conduct operations in cities far from the physical border, arresting individuals with prior deportation orders and those encountered incidentally during other enforcement actions. Encounters at the southern border fell sharply in early 2025 as asylum processing nearly ceased.
