Biden withdraws from 2024 presidential race and endorses Harris

President Biden announces he will not seek a second term, the first sitting president to withdraw from a presidential race since Lyndon Johnson declined to run again in 1968. Biden endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee within hours. The decision comes after a June 27 debate against Donald Trump in which Biden's halting performance sparked widespread alarm among Democratic allies and elected officials. Biden cites the need to "pass the torch to a new generation." Harris quickly secures the Democratic nomination and runs against Trump in the November general election.
