Commerce Invokes Section 232 for EU Steel Tariffs Despite WTO Rules

The Commerce Department invoked Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to reimpose 25% tariffs on European Union steel and aluminum imports, citing national security concerns. The EU immediately announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods worth approximately $28 billion. The action defied a 2022 WTO dispute settlement finding that the original Section 232 tariffs violated international trade rules.
