Jeffrey Epstein dies in federal custody at MCC New York, triggering DOJ Inspector General investigation into detention failures

Jeffrey Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and was pronounced dead. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death suicide by hanging. His death came one day after a court unsealed documents naming associates and one day after he had been taken off suicide watch despite a prior incident. Attorney General Barr ordered an investigation by the DOJ Inspector General and the FBI.
