Georgia Vogtle nuclear plant completes Unit 4 first new US reactors in 30 years
Georgia Power's Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant Unit 4 reaches commercial operation, completing the first new nuclear reactors built in the United States in over 30 years. Combined with Unit 3, which came online in 2023, Vogtle now has four operating reactors and is the largest source of clean electricity in America. The $35 billion project, supported by over $12 billion in Biden DOE loan guarantees and technical support, was years behind schedule and billions over budget. Despite the challenges, the Biden administration celebrates the completion as a milestone for nuclear energy's role in the clean energy transition. The reactors are designed to operate for 60+ years.
