Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigns minutes before House Ethics Committee hearing

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from Congress on April 21, 2026, minutes before a scheduled House Ethics Committee hearing at which Republicans planned to force a vote to expel her. Her resignation preempted the expulsion proceeding but did not end her federal criminal case, in which she faces 15 counts including theft of government funds and money laundering related to $5.7 million in FEMA overpayments.
