Democrats introduce bill to ban ICE and CBP use of facial recognition
Senators Edward Markey, Jeff Merkley, and Ron Wyden, along with Representative Pramila Jayapal, introduced the ICE Out of Our Faces Act on February 5, bicameral legislation that would prohibit ICE and CBP from acquiring or using facial recognition technology and other biometric surveillance systems. The bill required deletion of all existing biometric data collected for identification purposes and allowed individuals and state attorneys general to seek civil penalties for violations. Civil liberties groups including EPIC and the Electronic Frontier Foundation endorsed the legislation.
