JCPOA nuclear deal signed between Iran and P5+1
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is signed in Vienna after years of negotiation involving Iran, the United States, China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. The historic agreement limits Irans nuclear program to exclusively peaceful purposes. Iran eliminates 98 percent of its enriched uranium stockpile, reduces centrifuges, and accepts rigorous IAEA inspections. In return, international nuclear-related sanctions are lifted. The JCPOA marks a fundamental shift in U.S.-Iran relations and is hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough. On Implementation Day (January 16, 2016), all IAEA-verified nuclear-related sanctions are lifted and Iran gains access to global financial systems and oil markets.
