Trump signs Day 1 immigration orders and declares a national emergency at the border

On his first day back in office, President Trump signed executive orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border, invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, suspending the refugee admissions program, directing mass deportation operations, and ending birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. The orders directed DHS and DOJ to rapidly expand enforcement and detention capacity and reinstate Remain in Mexico. Federal courts immediately blocked the birthright citizenship order, and multiple other orders faced legal challenges within days.
