Fossil fuel industry invests $124.4 million in federal lobbying in 2022

The oil and gas sector invested approximately $124.4 million on federal lobbying efforts in 2022. Major companies like Exxon Mobil spent over $7.7 million and Chevron spent over $3.9 million. The industry lobbying focused on regulations on methane emissions, oil and gas extraction on federal lands, and financial incentives for carbon capture technologies. The American Petroleum Institute (API), a major lobbying firm, advocated against the Inflation Reduction Act's methane tax provisions and released a plan to end permitting restrictions on natural gas development.
