Supreme Court strikes down California's rules requiring nonprofits to disclose their major donors

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the 6-3 majority opinion in Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Bonta, striking down California requirement that charities disclose their major donors to the state attorney general. The Court held that the disclosure requirement was not narrowly tailored to California law enforcement interest and therefore violated the First Amendment freedom of association. Justices Sotomayor, Breyer, and Kagan dissented, warning the ruling would make it harder for states to investigate fraud and enforce financial regulations.
