Biden withdraws from 2024 presidential race exits after disastrous CNN debate

President Biden announces he will not seek re-election, posting on X (formerly Twitter) with the message "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down." Biden endorses Vice President Kamala Harris. The withdrawal follows Biden's severely criticized performance in the June 27 CNN debate against Trump, during which Biden appeared confused and struggled to articulate his record. A wave of Democratic elected officials and donors had privately and publicly called on Biden to step aside. Biden becomes the first incumbent president since LBJ (1968) not to seek re-election.
