Saturday Night Massacre Forges DOJ Independence Norm

President Richard Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus resigned rather than comply; Solicitor General Robert Bork carried out the firing. The public backlash accelerated Nixon's downfall and produced the reforms that wall the Justice Department off from White House control of individual cases.
