Rucho v. Common Cause Bars Federal Courts From Partisan Gerrymandering Claims

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that federal courts have no authority to hear claims of partisan gerrymandering, declaring them non-justiciable political questions. Chief Justice Roberts wrote that while excessive partisan gerrymandering is "unjust" and "incompatible with democratic principles," nothing in the Constitution gives federal courts a manageable standard to adjudicate such claims. The ruling pushed all partisan gerrymandering challenges to state courts operating under state constitutions.
