Trump withdraws US from JCPOA, calling it the worst deal ever and reimposing Iran sanctions

President Trump announced on May 8, 2018 that the United States would withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and reimpose nuclear-related sanctions on Iran. Trump called the deal defective at its core and said it could lead to a nuclear holocaust. European allies — France, Germany, and the UK — had urged Trump to remain in the agreement. Iran responded by steadily increasing its uranium enrichment, and by 2026 had accumulated roughly 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium. The withdrawal set the stage for the 2026 Trump administration attempt to negotiate a new framework with Iran.
