Government shuts down as FY2026 funding lapses

Federal funding lapsed at the start of fiscal year 2026 after Congress failed to pass appropriations or a stopgap. The shutdown began over Democratic demands to extend the enhanced ACA premium tax credits, furloughing about 670,000 workers and forcing roughly 730,000 more to work without pay.
