Illinois and Chicago Sue to Block Trump National Guard Deployment, Courts Agree

The city of Chicago and the state of Illinois filed suit against the Trump administration in October 2025 after the president invoked Title 10 authority to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago over the objections of both city and state officials. Three federal judges issued injunctions blocking the deployment within weeks of the filing. The administration had dispatched hundreds of Guard troops as part of Operation Midway Blitz, launched in September 2025 with the stated goal of supporting immigration enforcement.
