Journalist arrests spike to 48 in 2024 more than previous two years combined nearly 90% at Gaza

The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker documented 48 arrests or detentions of journalists in 2024, more than the previous two years combined. Nearly 90% of these arrests occurred in connection with Israel-Gaza war protests. The Freedom of the Press Foundation report shows police and officials are blatantly ignoring guidance from courts and the Department of Justice that journalists have a First Amendment right to cover protests, including officers' conduct after dispersal orders. Each arrest has serious consequences for press freedom and the public's right to know.
