Supreme Court reverses racial gerrymander ruling in Alexander v. South Carolina NAACP
The Supreme Court reversed the lower courts in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP on May 23, 2024, ruling 6-3 along ideological lines. Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, held that the district court applied the wrong legal standard by failing to presume good faith on the part of the legislature and by not adequately distinguishing racial from partisan motivations. The ruling allowed South Carolina to reinstate its original SC-1 map for the 2024 elections.
