Epstein dies in federal custody at MCC New York while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges
Jeffrey Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on August 10, 2019, and was pronounced dead at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The New York City medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging. Epstein had been placed on suicide watch after a July 23 incident in which he was found semi-conscious with neck injuries, then removed from watch roughly two weeks before his death. Two MCC guards responsible for checking on Epstein that night were later charged with falsifying prison records to cover up that they had slept through their required checks.
