Public Citizen report 446 hospitals in 44 states face closure risk from $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts

Public Citizen releases a report finding that 446 hospitals across 44 states face notable closure risk as a result of the approximately $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts enacted through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in July 2025. The report finds rural hospitals disproportionately at risk, with many rural facilities deriving 40-60% of their revenue from Medicaid. States like Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia, and New Mexico, which have high Medicaid dependency, face the greatest concentration of at-risk facilities. The report is released as Congress debates whether to provide supplemental Medicaid funding.
