Irma cuts across Florida as FEMA aid stretches across multiple states
Hurricane Irma struck Florida after devastating parts of the Caribbean and forced federal coordination across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and U.S. territories. GAO grouped Irma with Harvey and Maria as part of the 2017 hurricane season that impacted 25.8 million people and produced an estimated $265 billion in damages to the mainland, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The storm showed how simultaneous disasters strain federal contracting, commodities, housing and power-restoration systems.
