Trump tells four congresswomen of color to go back to other countries

President Donald Trump posts on social media on July 14, 2019, telling four Democratic congresswomen of color to "go back" to the countries they came from, even though three were born in the United States and all were U.S. citizens. The remarks target Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. The House of Representatives votes two days later to condemn the comments as racist. Trump denies that the remarks are racist and says the lawmakers should apologize to the country. The remarks are a direct example of racialized political rhetoric by a sitting president using a long-standing nativist phrase against elected officials of color.
