Trump signs executive order directing federal agencies to investigate contractors for DEI compliance violations
Executive Order 14173, signed on President Trump's first day back in office, directed federal agencies and the Department of Justice to enforce civil rights laws in ways that would prevent private employers and contractors with federal business from maintaining DEI programs, and instructed the heads of every agency to identify up to nine targets for civil compliance investigations among private sector entities with significant DEI commitments. The order extended the anti-DEI campaign from federal employment to the entire contracting sector. Companies doing business with the federal government — including pharmaceutical firms, technology companies, and defense contractors that also fund and partner with universities — immediately faced legal uncertainty about their own diversity programs. General counsels at major corporations began reviewing their hiring practices, supplier diversity programs, and university research partnerships for potential compliance risk.
