Trump directs Ellipse rally crowd to march on Capitol, where supporters storm Congress during electoral count

On January 6, 2021, President Trump addressed thousands of supporters at the Ellipse and urged them to march to the Capitol and "fight like hell" as Congress met to certify the 2020 electoral vote. The crowd attacked the Capitol beginning around 2:12 p.m., forcing evacuation of members of Congress, delaying certification for over six hours, and injuring approximately 140 police officers. The January 6 Committee found Trump was informed of the riot by 1:21 p.m. and delayed taking action for over three hours while his daughter Ivanka, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and congressional allies pleaded with him to intervene. Five people died in connection with the attack.
