Trump signs EO targeting Perkins Coie LLP — court permanently blocks it

President Trump signed Executive Order 14230 on March 6, 2025, directing federal agencies to suspend security clearances for all Perkins Coie LLP employees, review and cancel federal contracts with the firm's clients, and deny firm attorneys access to federal buildings — citing the firm's prior representation of Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign. Trump issued similar orders against Jenner & Block, WilmerHale, Susman Godfrey, and Paul Weiss. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell permanently blocked the Perkins Coie order on May 2, 2025, finding it violated the First, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments as unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and retaliation against attorneys for their representation choices.
