Trump retains classified national defense documents at Mar-a-Lago after leaving office
After leaving office in January 2021, Donald Trump retained hundreds of classified documents -- including materials bearing the highest classification markings -- at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, storing them in unsecured locations including a ballroom, bathroom, shower, and storage room. NARA spent over a year attempting to retrieve presidential records before referring the matter to DOJ in February 2022. The FBI executed a search warrant in August 2022 and recovered approximately 11,000 documents including over 100 with classification markings.
