Trump administration issues CFPB stop-work order, halting consumer protection agency

Acting CFPB Director Russell Vought issued a stop-work order in early February 2025 directing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to halt virtually all supervisory and enforcement activities and close its Washington headquarters. The order came after Elon Musk posted on social media that the CFPB should be "deleted." A federal judge subsequently blocked the order, finding the administration could not unilaterally halt statutory consumer protection functions Congress created in 2010.
