President Johnson Signs the Freedom of Information Act

President Lyndon Johnson signed the Freedom of Information Act, establishing the public's statutory right to request records from federal executive branch agencies. The law required agencies to disclose records on request unless specific exemptions applied, including national security, internal agency rules, and law enforcement investigative files. Florida had enacted a functionally similar public records law in 1909, predating the federal statute by 57 years.
