Biden signs law forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok or face US ban
President Biden signs the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act into law as part of a $95 billion national security package that also includes $61 billion for Ukraine and $26 billion for Israel. The law requires ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to sell TikTok within 270 days, or face a nationwide ban from US app stores and internet hosting services. A 90-day extension is available if a sale is in progress. TikTok, used by 170 million Americans, immediately vows to challenge the law in court as unconstitutional. Congress frames it as a national security measure to prevent the Chinese government from potentially accessing user data or influencing content. The deadline ultimately triggers TikTok briefly going dark in the US in January 2025 before Trump moves to delay enforcement.
