ICE arrested 146,000 immigrants with no criminal record since January 2025

The Washington Post publishes an analysis on April 3, 2026, of newly released government data showing that since January 2025, ICE arrested more than 146,000 immigrants with no criminal charges or convictions — compared to approximately 127,000 with a criminal conviction on their record. ICE held as many as 66,000 people in detention simultaneously — the highest level ever recorded. Forty-one percent of detained individuals have no criminal record. Trump administration officials had repeatedly stated ICE would take a "targeted" approach focused on dangerous criminals, particularly after two U.S. citizens were shot and killed by non-ICE-priority suspects in Minneapolis in early 2026. The Cato Institute finds only 5 percent of ICE detainees have violent convictions, while 73 percent have no convictions at all.
