FDR signs National Labor Relations Act (Wagner Act)
President Franklin Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act on July 5, 1935, creating the National Labor Relations Board with enforcement power over private-sector labor disputes. Senator Robert Wagner authored the bill after the Supreme Court struck down the NIRA in Schechter Poultry. The NLRA established the model of an independent administrative agency staffed by experts and shielded from direct presidential firing.
