New York Refuses to Backfill Statue of Liberty Operations During Shutdown

New York State declined to use state funds to keep the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island open during the October 2025 federal government shutdown. In previous shutdowns, states had sometimes stepped in to fund National Park Service operations to protect tourism economies. Governor Hochul cited the unprecedented length and political nature of the shutdown as grounds for refusing to subsidize federal responsibilities.
