Trump Administration Announces It Will Not Renew Baltic Security Initiative

The Financial Times reported on September 4, 2025 that the Trump administration planned to end U.S. military training and assistance programs for European countries, specifically the Baltic Security Initiative and related Section 333 programs. The Defense Department under Secretary Pete Hegseth proposed not requesting renewal of these programs in the FY2026 budget, which would let them expire at the end of fiscal year 2026. The BSI had delivered over $1 billion to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania since 2021, funding training, exercises, and equipment to enhance NATO interoperability on Russia's western border. Washington Post and Bloomberg confirmed the story the same day. The decision drew immediate condemnation from Baltic defense ministers and bipartisan concern from Senate Armed Services Committee members.
