Supreme Court bars forced flag salute in public schools

West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette rejected compulsory patriotic speech in public schools. The ruling protected Jehovah’s Witness students who refused to salute the flag and made clear that government cannot force national unity by commanding people to say what officials want them to say.
