President Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day ceasefire beginning April 16, described as an Israeli gesture of goodwill to launch formal peace negotiations. Lebanon committed to taking meaningful steps to prevent Hezbollah from attacking Israeli targets, while Israel retained its six-mile buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The ceasefire was later extended three weeks on April 23 after White House talks. The agreement came as Israel had been conducting strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon simultaneous with the broader Iran conflict.

The Senate defeated Sen. Bernie Sanders's joint resolutions to block $446.8 million in US arms sales to Israel, voting 40-59 against the first measure covering $295 million in Caterpillar D9R and D9T bulldozers and 36-63 against the second covering $151.8 million in 1,000-pound gravity bombs. Forty of 47 Senate Democrats voted for the bulldozer measure, the highest Democratic support ever recorded for blocking Israel arms sales, but seven Democrats including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer voted with Republicans. Sanders filed the disapproval resolutions under the Arms Export Control Act.

Hours after the ceasefire announcement, the IDF launched "Operation Eternal Darkness," its largest single-day assault on Lebanon. Fifty fighter jets dropped approximately 160 munitions across more than 100 targets in roughly 10 minutes. Five central Beirut neighborhoods were struck without advance warning. Lebanon's Civil Defense reported 254 killed and 1,165 wounded. The Health Ministry counted 112 killed and 837 wounded.

President Trump told PBS NewsHour that Lebanon was "not included in the deal. Because of Hezbollah. They were not included." Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu separately said the ceasefire "does not include Lebanon," calling it "a stop on the way to achieving all of our objectives." French President Macron contradicted both. Vice President Vance called it a "legitimate misunderstanding."

Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf released a public statement on April 8, 2026 accusing the United States of violating three clauses of the 10-point ceasefire plan within 24 hours. These include continued Israeli strikes on Lebanon, a drone found in Iranian airspace, and US rejection of Iran's nuclear enrichment rights. Iran's state media and the IRGC separately reported that tanker passage through the Strait of Hormuz had been halted in response to the Lebanon strikes. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters "the strait is open" and the White House denied the closure reports, calling them "completely unacceptable."
