Robert "Bob" Menendez represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate from January 2006 until his resignation on August 20, 2024, following his conviction on 16 federal counts including bribery, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent. A federal jury in Manhattan found him guilty on July 16, 2024, of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, and other bribes from businessmen seeking his political influence; he was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison on January 29, 2025.
