Charles Sumner

historical
Massachusetts senator and leading abolitionist who pushed for the Thirteenth Amendment in the Senate and submitted an expanded version in February 1864. Sumner had been beaten nearly to death on the Senate floor in 1856 for his anti-slavery speeches — his empty chair became a symbol of the abolitionist cause.
