Senate Republicans unveil $72B ICE and CBP reconciliation package
Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees released a $71.7 billion reconciliation spending package on May 5, 2026, including $38.2 billion for ICE, $26 billion for CBP, $5 billion for other border enforcement, and $1.5 billion for DOJ immigration programs. The package represented the largest single immigration enforcement appropriation in US history and would be borrowed entirely, adding to the deficit. Markup hearings were scheduled for the week of May 19 before a floor vote.

Senate Judiciary Committee holds hearing on four Trump district judge nominees
Featured
The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) as ranking member, holds a confirmation hearing on Apr. 29 for four Trump district court nominees. Committee members question Hendershot on election law experience, Jones and Marck on immigration enforcement record, and Kuntz on ethics concerns about his simultaneous participation in Trump-related litigation. Sheria Clarke refuses to answer who won 2020 election at Senate hearing
On March 25, 2026, Sheria Akins Clarke appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee and declined to say that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election when Sen. Richard Blumenthal asked Trump judicial nominees the question directly. Clarke also avoided a direct judgment on January 6 by citing ongoing litigation. The hearing made election legitimacy a live test for a lifetime judicial nominee and gave senators a record to weigh before the committee and floor votes (Senate Judiciary hearing notice; Blumenthal release; South Carolina Public Radio; Alliance for Justice; Clarke QFR responses).

Noem refuses to retract domestic terrorist label for Pretti and Good at Senate hearing
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee and repeatedly declined to apologize for calling Minneapolis shooting victims Alex Pretti and Renée Good domestic terrorists, even when pressed by Pretti's parents in the hearing room. Noem claimed she was relaying information from agents on the ground and said she did not call Pretti a domestic terrorist but rather described the incident as "appearing to be an instance of" domestic terrorism, despite video evidence to the contrary. Senators from both parties demanded her resignation.

DHS inspector general tells Congress Noem systematically blocked 11 investigations
DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari formally notified Congress that Secretary Noem had systematically obstructed 11 of his office's investigations by denying access to department records. One blocked probe was a pending criminal investigation, and another covered Secret Service failures during the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Noem defended the blocks at Senate Judiciary testimony, claiming the IG needed to file proper scoping memos rather than receive unfettered access. Cuffari's letter reached Congress on March 3-4 and was made public amid the hearing.
