Noem's $220M self-deportation ad campaign routed to no-bid contractors with Trump ties
Congressional hearings revealed that DHS Secretary Noem awarded a $220 million self-deportation ad campaign without competitive bidding to two firms with ties to Trump's campaign orbit, including one company formed just 11 days before receiving the contract. Noem testified that Trump personally approved the campaign, but Trump publicly contradicted her, telling Reuters he never signed off on it and was "not thrilled." ProPublica identified that at least one firm connected to Corey Lewandowski secretly received a share of the contract.

Tillis places hold on all DHS nominees after Noem stonewalls OIG on 10 investigations
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced he was blocking all DHS nominations en bloc after submitting a letter from Inspector General Joseph Cuffari documenting 10 instances where Noem misled or obstructed his investigations. Tillis called DHS leadership a "disaster" and "failure" at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, and threatened to deny quorum in multiple committees if Noem failed to respond within two weeks. He simultaneously called for her resignation—one of two Senate Republicans to do so that day.

East Germany builds Berlin Wall, Kennedy deploys 1,500 reinforcements along Autobahn to West Berlin
East German troops begin erecting the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, sealing the border between East and West Berlin to stop a refugee exodus that had seen 3.5 million East Germans flee to the West since 1945. President John Kennedy sends Vice President Lyndon Johnson and retired General Lucius Clay to West Berlin as a show of resolve, then dispatches a 1,500-troop battle group along the Autobahn to reinforce the Berlin garrison. The Wall becomes the Cold War's most visible symbol and the central justification for maintaining U.S. troops in Germany for three more decades.
