Jim Baird, a decorated Vietnam War veteran who lost his left arm during a convoy ambush in Operation Lam Son 719, earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star before completing his Ph.D. in animal science at the University of Kentucky. He served as Putnam County Commissioner from 2006 to 2010 and represented District 44 in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2010 to 2018. Baird won election to Congress in 2018 to represent Indiana's 4th District, a largely rural area covering 16 counties in west-central Indiana, and focuses on agriculture, energy, and science policy.
