FBI Director Kash Patel ordered agents to raid the Bethesda, Maryland home and Washington office of former National Security Adviser John Bolton on August 22, 2025, seizing computers, phones, binders, and documents labeled "Trump." Patel, who had published an "enemies list" of 60 individuals in his 2023 book "Government Gangsters," confirmed he personally ordered the search. Bolton, who had served in Trump's first-term White House before publicly criticizing him, was under investigation for allegedly sharing classified information in his 2020 memoir. Bolton was indicted October 16, 2025 on 18 charges. Critics said the raid — announced months after Patel told Congress there would be "no politicization" at the FBI — confirmed his bureau was targeting Trump opponents.

Billionaire Ronald Lauder, a longtime friend of Donald Trump since both attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the 1960s, pitched Trump on acquiring Greenland from Denmark in summer 2019 and offered to serve as the administration's intermediary for the transaction. Trump told then-National Security Advisor John Bolton that "a friend of mine, a really, really experienced businessman, thinks we can get Greenland." Denmark rejected the proposal, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called it absurd. Lauder's push came while his investor group was quietly acquiring stakes in Greenlandic water and energy companies.

Kash Patel was promoted to Senior Director for Counterterrorism on the National Security Council in August 2019, after initially joining the NSC staff in February 2019. Patel had previously served as senior counsel to House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes, where he played a central role in drafting the 2018 memo challenging the FBI's Russia investigation surveillance. Before entering politics, Patel worked as a national security prosecutor at the Department of Justice under the Obama administration.

Iran's IRGC shot down a US Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk surveillance drone (valued at $100+ million) over or near the Strait of Hormuz. Trump approved retaliatory strikes on three IRGC targets, then called them off reportedly 10 minutes before launch after learning approximately 150 Iranians would be killed. Bolton and Pompeo advocated for the strike. Gen. Dunford urged caution. The US instead launched cyberattacks against IRGC missile systems on approximately June 22. Trump tweeted "We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights when I asked, how many will die. 150 people, sir, was the answer. 10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone."

NSA John Bolton announced the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force (B-52s) to the Central Command region, responding to "troubling and escalatory indications and warnings" of Iranian attack preparations. Additional assets including the USS Arlington and Patriot missile batteries followed on May 10. This military buildup signaled readiness for direct military confrontation.
